Roger Tory Peterson

Until his death in the late 1990's, Roger Tory Peterson was one of America's pre-eminent artist-naturalists and arguably the inventor of the field guide. He made people love birds like no one since John James Audubon. Since the publication of "A Field Guide to the Birds" in 1934, Mr. Peterson has journeyed to Antarctica, the Bering Sea and the Andes Mountains in South America supporting the interests of wildlife and wildlife conservation. Mr. Peterson has won every major award for ornithology, natural science and conservation. He has been awarded the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States, as well as citations in other fields and nine honorary degrees.

The key to the success of the Peterson field guide series is the quick recognition system he uses. This system has been called the greatest invention since binoculars and the field guides are credited with helping to set the stage for the environmental movement.

I was first introduced to the Peterson field guide series in a college field biology course. Over the years, these field guides have become an indispensable resource while hiking through forests or watching the backyard bird feeder. These guides, especially "A Field Guide to the Birds", are highly recommended for anyone, novice to expert, whose interests lie in exploring the world around them.

Peterson Field Guide to Freshwater Fishes, Second Edition (Peterson Field Guides) -ARRAY(0x31e9440) - - Peterson Field Guides - Field Guide To Freshwater Fish - Peterson Field Guide

There are nearly 1,000 species of freshwater fishes in North America alone, and identifying them can sometimes be a daunting task. In fact, in just the twenty years since publication of the first edition of the Peterson Field Guide to Freshwater Fishes, the number of species has risen by almost 150, including 19 marine invaders and 16 newly established nonnative species. This second edition incorporates all of these new species, plus all-new maps and a collection of new and revised plates. Some of the species can be told apart only by minute differences in coloration or shape, and these beautifully illustrated plates reveal exactly how to distinguish each species.

The guide includes detailed maps and information showing where to locate each species of fish—whether that species can be found in miles-long stretches of river or small pools that cover only dozens of square feet. The ichthyologic world of the twenty-first century is not the same as it was in the twentieth, and this brand-new edition of the definitive field guide to freshwater fishes reflects these many changes.
