"What? Only three interview requests overnight? Has the world forgotten me already?" was the e-mail response from Sir Arthur to a New York Times interview request the first week of 2001. Obviously, he has been very busy in the beginning of a year forever linked to his name. In 1968, Stanley Kubrick finished a science fiction epic film after nealy three years of production based on a short story by then just plain Arthur C. Clarke (The Sentinel, 1948). The rest was history, as they say...

Arthur C. Clarke was born in Minehead,Somerset on December 16, 1917 and was an avid collector of pulp fiction magazines. He pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in physics, and pure and applied mathematics at King's College, London. Clarke became chairman of the British Interplanetary Sociey and recruited George Bernard Shaw as well as many other new members in the mid 1940s. He met C.S.Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkein at Oxford. Clarke published his first novel Prelude to Space in 1947. He was awarded a CBE in 1989 and was knighted in 1998. Today, Sir Arthur lives in Sri Lanka and continues to amaze everyone with his unique foresight and creative thought.

Things then progress from a series of seemingly mundane reports about odd atmospheric disturbances taking place on Mars to the arrival of Martians just outside of London. At first the Martians seem laughable, hardly able to move in Earth's comparatively heavy gravity even enough to raise themselves out of the pit created when their spaceship landed. But soon the Martians reveal their true nature as death machines 100-feet tall rise up from the pit and begin laying waste to the surrounding land. Wells quickly moves the story from the countryside to the evacuation of London itself and the loss of all hope as England's military suffers defeat after defeat. With horror his narrator describes how the Martians suck the blood from living humans for sustenance, and how it's clear that man is not being conquered so much a corralled. --Craig E. Engler
