It’s a rare human who actually enjoys clipping a dog’s nails; and rarer still, the dog who enjoys it. Enter Dremel’s cordless groomer, a quiet, battery-powered rotary tool that gently grinds down your pet’s nails without cutting. We happen to know a particular hound named Sophie who’s endured more than her share of cracked nails and bleeding nail beds, the result of the standard guillotine-type nail trimmers. Though she was a bit wary of the Dremel, she sniffed at it and decided it was harmless. Then we set it on the floor and turned it on. Sophie seemed concerned for a minute, but then lost interest. We let her get used to the sound of the Dremel for a few minutes, then got down to business. We expected her to cringe and pull away when we took paw in hand, for what usually follows is not pleasant for her. She submitted reluctantly at first to the Dremel, probably expecting the worst, but once we distracted her with a piece of rawhide, she forgot about the nail hubbub and let us carry on. The whole thing was quick and painless, which made a change for Sophie, and was actually kind of soothing for the humans, which definitely made a change for us. We followed the advice in the manual and alternated between two paws at a time, not keeping the abrasive on any nail for more than a couple of seconds, and we made sure each nail was cool before grinding it a second time. If we had a criticism, it would be to wish only that Dremel would include the ½-inch drum for larger dogs like Sophie as well as the smaller one. This driver would look more at home on a Fisher-Price workbench than anywhere else, but its looks are completely deceiving. It’s tiny, it’s light as a feather (less than 2 pounds including the battery!), but we promise, it packs power you won’t believe. The Dremel rotary tool idea was great to begin with, but now, they’ve revved up the basic rotary tool and added some exclusive attachments that make the XPR series one of the coolest tools we get to try. This one’s got all the bells and whistles of previous models and tackles the same tasks: you can carve, grind, polish, trim, sand, cut a wide range of material, shape, sharpen, clean, remove grout, smooth, drill, rout, sculpt, engrave, strip finishes. Similarly, it has Dremel’s huge array of accessory possibilities and the variable speed (from 5,000 to 35,000 rpm), but it has almost twice the amperage of its predecessors for plenty of power. In addition, the speed selector switch is separate from the power switch, allowing you to leave the tool at a certain speed setting for next time. Its design is a bit of departure, and that’s a matter of user preference, but after some getting-used to, we like it. The primary reason you’d step up to this model from another rotary, though, is the plethora of great attachments made only for the XPR that emulate shop full of tools. Hands down, our favorite is the MultiSaw. Just attach it and your rotary tool becomes a mini reciprocating saw, making straight and curved cuts in a variety of materials. Using standard jigsaw blades, you can cut soft and hard wood, ply, metal, PVC, plastic and more. Next, there’s the planer head that turns your Dremel into a portable planer. It’s designed for two types of planing – straight and at 45 degrees, with a width capacity of 2-1/8 inches, perfect for a warped or sticking door. Though we didn’t try any shaping or carving with it, we think it would do a great job of it, too. There’s also a flex light exclusive to this series that dovetails easily into a groove on the rear of the tool. It’s powered by lithium ion batteries (included) and does a fantastic job illuminating detailed work pieces. As with all the other Dremel rotaries, you can attach the flex shaft for super-fine detail work as well as reaching into places practically no tool has gone before. The circle cutter’s easy to use, too, and works like a charm, giving you perfect circular cutouts every time. And everything has its place in the well-designed storage case, making the whole shebang perfectly portable. If you’re a rotary tool fan, you’ll love the XPR. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste

This is what a miter saw ought to be: accurate, sturdy, powerful, versatile, user-friendly and packed full of cool features. If we had to choose a favorite aspect, it would have to be the handle. It’s vertical. It’s horizontal. And it’s a couple of other things in between. It locks quickly and easily into any of four positions, so both lefties and righties have complete comfort and control. This saw is beefy -- it weighs in at 55 pounds and it’s got a nice, wide footprint that promises the ultimate stability, and sliding extensions bring your support area to 37-1/4 inches. If you’re in the market for a stand for this saw as well, we like both the Bosch TracRac as well as the DeWalt DW723. The dual bevel is a great feature, swinging 47 degrees left and 46 degrees right, with positive bevel stops at 31.6 and 33.9 degrees for flawless crown molding cuts. For miter cuts, the blade swings an impressive 52 degrees left and 60 degrees to the right. There’s even a micro-fine adjustment here, letting you override a detent by as much as 2 degrees. Now that’s precision. We absolutely love the fence on this saw – Bosch calls it a Speed-track sliding fence – because it’s a full 4 inches tall and has a beautifully readable inch-scale on it. It’s perfect for crown molding, handling pieces up to 6 inches wide when angled against the fence. We’re suddenly rethinking our earlier statement about our favorite feature on this saw; on second thought, it might well be that all the controls – including the bevel lever – are up front. We’re pretty tired of reaching around a saw body to set a bevel, so this is a most welcome upgrade. Adjustments are so much faster and easier, and all the scales are right up front, too. Capacities are generous, thanks to the slide, with a max cut of a 2-by-12 at a 45-degree bevel and 3-5/8 by 12 inches when the blade is upright. And yes, this saw has a laser cutting guide, but unless you really want one, we wouldn’t let that sway a decision on this saw one way or the other. It’s a nice feature if you’re likely to use it, but most of us woodworkers prefer to get a visual on exactly where that blade meets the wood. In all, this is a beauty of a saw, with features you aren’t going to find on other saws in its class. And we still can’t pick our favorite between the handle and the up-front controls. It’s a funny thing about jigsaws; most of us tend to reach for another tool in its stead, having had less-than-great experiences with the little beasts. But here comes Bosch’s 1590, and it elevates the outcast jigsaw to the most-wanted list. The first thing we liked about this saw is its heft; it’s beefy, solid and made with that famous Swiss quality. You wrap your hand around the soft, substantial grip, squeeze the ample trigger and the soft-start whirs gently; with hardly any effort from you, the blade slices through whatever’s ahead of it. Perhaps because it’s heavier than most jigsaws, there’s practically zero vibration, giving you a delightfully smooth, no-buzz experience, something pretty much unheard of in your average jigsaw. Another nice feature is the speed mechanism: Set your maximum speed on the trigger dial, then control your speed up to that max by squeezing the trigger. On long cuts, you can lock the trigger on, too, and the blower actually does keep your cutline clear. If that’s all this saw had going for it, that would be enough for us. But coolest of all is the blade-change system that literally ejects the blade in a split second, takes the new one and gets you right back to your cutting – all tool-free. Amazing. When we first heard of barrel grip jig saws, we were pretty skeptical about the comfort and control they could offer, since we were so accustomed to the typical top-handle design. It really was a genuine surprise to feel the difference. The control is amazing, and cutting scrollwork is an absolute delight with this saw, something we can't honestly say about most top-handle models. With this design, it almost feels as if the cutter is an extension of your hand, smooth and responsive. The blade-change system on this Bosch is among the best we've seen: They weren't kidding when they named it the One Touch Blade Change. We like the speed range, from 500 all the way up to 2,800 strokes per minute to handle whatever you need to cut, and the cutting line actually stays clean because of the integrated, adjustable blower (which, we have to say, works better at higher speeds). With the barrel design, there's no trigger; instead, the speed is controlled by a dial on the rear of the tool body. Here’s a nice little saw that’s perfect for consistent cuts at the jobsite or at the heart of the do-it-yourselfer’s workshop. It’s got all the bells and whistles that the big boys have, including T-slots for the miter gauge and a self-aligning fence. The 13-amp motor produces a no-load rpm of 4,700, and combined with a cut capacity at 90 degrees of 3 inches, it’s a handy saw for trim carpenters and home woodworkers. Even at 45 degrees, you’re still able to cut 2-1/2-inch stock. Blade height and bevel adjustments are smooth and easy, and the fence moves well on the rails, locking securely. Be aware that this table isn’t the solid-surface type; instead, it’s got openings in the surface. Watch your fingers. Of course, this saw doesn’t have much rip capacity to the right of the blade (not quite 10 inches), as it doesn’t have table extensions, but at this price, we wouldn’t expect that. This is a solid, well-built machine. One great feature is the 4-position blade clamp allows for flush cutting and increased versatility for vertical and horizontal cutting operations.
